Tucked away in the lush hills of St. Croix’s west end, Little La Grange Farm & Lawaetz Museum is a timeless escape that blends natural beauty with deep historical roots. Whether you’re a lover of Caribbean culture and architecture or simply enjoy exploring off-the-beaten-path gems, this lovingly preserved property is a must-see.

On a recent visit, I was immediately struck by the vibrant landscape, lush with tropical vegetation and anchored by a majestic Samana tree—a centerpiece of the grounds. The estate’s historic charm radiates from every corner, starting with the beautifully restored Great House and extending into the gardens, outbuildings, and museum collections.

A Journey Through Time

We opted for the guided tour (though self-guiding would be just as enjoyable). We were welcomed by Adrian, an enthusiastic and entertaining host whose knowledge of the estate’s past made the

experience even richer. With plenty of personality and humor, Adrian walked us through the legacy of the Lawaetz family, who preserved the estate as a living museum, offering insight into St.

Croix’s Danish colonial period and plantation-era life.

Inside, the upstairs rooms hold their original furnishings—including hand-painted china, antique clocks, and canopied beds. The attention to detail is remarkable. One of the most memorable spaces was the striking blue kitchen, a preserved snapshot of domestic life, with rustic cookware and tools displayed just as they would’ve been a century ago.

Beyond the House: A Living Farm

The museum isn’t just about the past—it’s also a working organic farm. Though I didn’t make it to the farm store, I explored the garden and pig area, which added authenticity and charm to the visit. The grounds are peaceful and full of life, offering a quiet moment to reflect on the enduring connection between land, heritage, and community.
